Ether & Ember: Drawing, Clay & the Spaces Between

A guided collaborative workshop blending drawing and clay: move between charcoal and clay to explore movement, weight and transformation.

This collaborative session brings together gestural drawing and clay embodiment in a single evolving process. Participants will move between stations, beginning with movement-led mark-making and transitioning into clay, or vice versa, allowing each material to inform the next.

Guided by artists Kandre Arámide Hassan and Freda Osayuki Igiogbe, attendees will explore how heat and atmosphere, weight and lightness, imprint and gesture converse across mediums. The workshop highlights transformation as a shared language: what moves through charcoal can echo in clay, and what settles in clay can reappear as line.

Themes: transformation, duality, conversation, material thresholds

Outcome: A paired set of clay + drawing experiments showing cross-material influence.

HOLDING MEMORY: Soft Sculpting & The Practice of Slow Forming Through Clay

Led by sculptor Freda Osayuki Igiogbe, participants are invited to explore clay as a vessel for memory, tension, and transformation.

Through hand-building and small-scale sculptural exercises, attendees will learn how to work with the material's natural responsiveness... it's warmth, weight, rresistance, and eventual stillness.

Freda will introduce the idea of clay as ember, a material that remembers touch, absorbs gesture, and moves toward permanence through heat. Participants will create experimental clay forms that hold traces of their own movement, balance, and energy.

Themes: tactility, balance, imprint, rersponsiveness, ancestral memory, material, transformation, tension and release.

Outcome: Small sculptural studies + an understanding of clay's emotional and ancestral resonances.

WEATHERING THE BODY: Movement-Led Charcoal & Ink Drawing

In this workshop, Kandre Arámide Hassan guides participants through a series of intuitive, movement-led drawing exercises inspired by her weather journal approach to charcoal. Using the body as a barometer for internal climate, attendees will explore how gesture, breath, and shifting emotional states can translate directly into line, texture, and atmosphere.

Through layered mark-making, charcoal ink, and dry media, participants will map their own in-between spaces, tracing the subtle transformation that occurs when sensation becomes form.

No drawing experience required. This is a space for process, release, and discovery.

Core themes:

  • Embodied memory

  • Gesture as language

  • Mapping interior landscapes

  • Dream logic & intuitive response

Outcome: A series of abstract drawings + guided somatic exercises, in a small group environment.
