<image:caption>28/02/2020 - 26/04/2020 Stirring the paint and casting the spell, artists KAITO Itsuki, Bora Akinciturk and Benjamin Reichwald join forces for the 2020 renauguration of The Residence Gallery in London’s East End. Pointy fingers swathed in gradients of pastel purple flames, the Amazon Fire burns bright tonight! This painting exhibition forms a rite of passage into an intangible omniverse of alien escapades and unidentified cosmetic textures in an information age. We re-purpose a sense of ourselves for a taste of things to come. Benjamin Reichwald (born in Sweden, 1994) lives and works in Berlin. Since 2013 he has built a critically acclaimed body of work under the moniker “Bladee”, as a singer, producer, fashion designer, visual artist and CEO of Drain Gang. This exhibition, however, is the first time his paintings and drawings have been shown in a gallery setting. The work extends the cult-like mythology and symbolism of his self-made album artwork towards a high-pitched psychedelia inspired from practice in realizing and defining hyperdimensional pictures. KAITO Itsuki (born in Sapporo Japan, 1993) makes her London debut with paintings that play out an immorality and shameful narcissism through situations and characters. Common motifs include knives, tightened belts, excrement and divinely destructive hands of Amazones. Her paintings take us to the darkest regions of the human psyche, offering a painted mythological lesson for a contemporary digital age. Bora Akinciturk (London based, born in Ankara, Turkey, 1982) playfully disorients us amidst fact-checked physical “reality”, intergenerational sensibilities and the slippery virtual outskirts of the internet. Featured in this exhibition are 2 re-worked paintings; an Igor Morski digital illustration of surreal alien star children remade as a traditional oil painting. The other, an oil painting after a copy believed to be attributed to a copy of a lost work by Godfried Schalcken (Dutch painter 1643–1706), featuring a person taking a light from a naked flame.</image:caption>

<image:caption>02/07/20 – 26/07/20 As the world went into lockdown a distanced dialogue emerged. An urgency to retain a sense of connectedness in a culture of cancellations and postponed projects spurred a collaborative foot forward. This month TRG unveils a new collection, the culmination of a mail art project that began in early March. The exhibition presents the work of 18 artists who exchanged works and ideas, sustaining contact in the midst of far reaching distancing measures. Following a loose variation on the "exquisite corpse" format, artists sent each other partially finished works in concealed portions with the next artist developing the work. In a chain of participation and exchange, this communal act of making art played a relevant role in channelling these exceptional times. Taking cues from the rich history of collaborative mail art projects executed by the likes of Ray Johnson in the 60s; Matthew Higgs’ Imprint 93 project in the 90’s; Moyra Davey’s ‘mailer works’; and Raymond Pettibon & Marcel Dzama’s 'Forgetting The Hand’ project in 2015; the exhibition consists of a collection of 6 final works on paper and an assortment of postal materials that document the project. Artists sent works from all corners of the UK, to the US, and into Europe. Some artists sent works to friends, others to strangers, others used the opportunity to maintain connection with people where lockdown intensifies already precarious circumstances. For example, Barry Reigate sent his work via Carneys Community, an outreach program for disadvantaged and excluded young people in South London. A text written by Ella Fleck accompanies the exhibition. Featuring: Klein / Morag Keil / Melika Ngombe Kolongo / Racheal Crowther / Nicholas Cheveldave / Rael Stone / Tiz Creel / Derek Mainella / Tabitha Steinberg / India Nielsen / Tom Hardwick-Allan / Jos Nyreen / Daniel Swan / Claire Barrow / Carson Foley / Barry Reigate / Kian Hardy / Joe Cheetham</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the Belly of a Slovenly Crow 10/09/20 – 04/10/20 PV 10/09/20, 12:00 - 21:00, Booking required “Using mundane acts of either activity or passivity and taking a cue from the abjection and otherness of the female form, I depict counter narratives that question how human beings grapple with the I & the other, the inside & the outside, the subject & the object.”-SM TRG is delighted to present a new series of paintings by recent Slade graduate Shailee Mehta (b. India 1998). Her artistic practice extrapolates memory and nostalgia to a context of history, mythology and contemporary society. Her work is descriptive of a poetics of space where ideas of interiority, the interior and the exterior are placed next to each other. The horizon line and its indistinct, divisive nature is employed as a trope to create a dialogue between the here and there. Within this, narratives of looking and being looked at take up multiple meanings such as desire, contemplation or rejection. “Otherness in my work takes form in either the context of exclusion, subjection or disregard, or its mystification through mythology and superstitions. These structures overlap through familiar motifs of the public & the private and props & objects that create a simulacrum for self-referencing mythologies.”-SM In Lost Slippers and The Sun Might Lose Its Bearings in Your Unreliable Hands there is a sense of anxiety, where the scene is held together by multiple female gazes, as if habitually waiting for a known unknown. The uncanny combination of industrial oranges and pinks with the earthen tones evokes a similar uncertainty of place and time. “Throughout this entire series, I was actively looking at Hindu mythology and iconography which has several examples of animals being portrayed as demons, gods or as carriers and helpers which falls in contrast to their domestication and deification today.”-SM This becomes a significant point of entry into the politics of subjecting animals to our desires through rituals and superstitions. “The friction between the traditional and the modern, which materialises itself in various forms such as goddess worship in Hindu society, against the tangible political and cultural threats to the ordinary woman in India, is another corollary of my larger interest in womanhood. This existential conflict can also be reflected in domestic life, where the presence of a woman’s body is rejected and praised at the same time.”-SM BIO Born in Indore (India, 1998), Shailee Mehta completed her Foundation Diploma from UAL, London in 2015 and her BFA at The Slade School of Fine Art in 2020. She has been part of various group shows including STOMACH, Hoxton Arches Gallery (London 2017), AIRGENTUM Hoja de Ruta Residency (Spain 2018), Space 118 (Mumbai, 2019), AucArt Exhibition and Sale (2020). Mehta currently lives and works out of London. Adopting an expansive approach to cultural work that regards the artist’s role beyond a studio, she has also worked at The Museum of Modern Art assisting the curatorial team on their expansion project and Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2018 as an Art Mediator.</image:caption>

Book your visit Since 2013 Benjamin Reichwald has built a critically acclaimed body of work under the moniker “Bladee”, as a singer, producer, fashion designer, visual artist and founding member of Drain Gang. This is the first time his paintings and drawings have been shown in a solo exhibition. The work stems from the same artistic vein as his music, and the mixed media artworks are interpretations and visualizations of introspective dreamscape worlds. The Residence Gallery is delighted to present an enthralling series of watercolours by Jack Jubb in a solo presentation for MINOR ATTRACTIONS. These works represent a new direction for the artist, as he recently started using the medium to transform the geography and dimensions of his practice during a time of emotional turmoil. Jubb states, “I found it necessary to depart from my studio and a conceptual engagement with screens and media consumption to pursue works that draw from the realm of the imaginary with drawing being the primary focus.” These works reflect feelings of anxiety and pessimism, the contentious experience of embodiment and the lurid symbolic manifestations of dreams. Minor Attractions, in its second edition, is taking place at The Mandrake from October 8 - 13th, 2024, featuring over 30 exhibitors alongside a robust performance and events program.
